What makes N64 collecting distinctive
The Nintendo 64 has a tightly curated library compared to its competitors. Where the PlayStation had over a thousand North American releases, the N64 has around 300 licensed titles. That compressed library means the percentage of genuinely scarce and expensive titles is higher than on most platforms. There is less filler but the filler that exists is often expensive simply because production runs were smaller.
Label condition is the central issue for N64 cart collecting. The labels on N64 cartridges peel at the edges more readily than most platforms — decades of handling, storage conditions, and normal wear leave many carts with peeling corners, lifted edges, or outright missing sections of label. A clean, tight label with no peeling and good color represents a much more desirable cart than a standard copy of the same game.
N64 boxes are in a category of their own. Nintendo's boxes were large and colorful but made of standard cardboard — and most were discarded after purchase. Complete N64 games with original boxes are genuinely uncommon, and the boxed versions of the most expensive titles are priced accordingly. A boxed copy of Majora's Mask, Paper Mario, or Harvest Moon 64 represents a significant investment.
The Expansion Pak is a relevant accessory for N64 collectors. A handful of games — Majora's Mask, Donkey Kong 64, Perfect Dark, and a few others — require the Expansion Pak to play. N64 label condition and cart grading
There is no standardized grading system for N64 carts the way there is for graded sealed games, but collectors typically assess label condition by four factors: edge peeling, center condition, color brightness, and whether the label has been cleaned with abrasive materials. Carts that have been marker-written on, stickered, or had labels replaced are worth less than unmodified originals regardless of the game.
The cartridge shell itself also matters on some N64 titles. A few games were produced in colored or semi-transparent cart shells — the Pokémon Stadium games used grey shells, Donkey Kong 64 came with a yellow cart, and some regional variants have different shell colors. These are collectible details that a generic tracker cannot capture but that a notes field can record cleanly.

Why are N64 boxes so rare and expensive?
Most parents and buyers threw away the N64 box once the game was out of it. Nintendo did not design the boxes to be kept long-term, and most children did not hold onto packaging. Three decades later, original N64 boxes in good condition represent a small fraction of surviving copies, which drives the premium for complete games well above the cart-only price.
Does the Expansion Pak affect which N64 games I can play?
Several N64 games require the Expansion Pak and will not run without it. Majora's Mask displays a screen telling you to insert the Expansion Pak on boot. Donkey Kong 64 came bundled with one. Perfect Dark's full multiplayer requires it. If building a playable collection, the Expansion Pak is part of a complete setup for those titles.
